From age to age...

On a day that I was being contemplative for once and I got to thinking.... whatever happened to the Age of Monsters? In the older tales and stories monsters were really monsters, something scary and dangerous if not frightening. They filled the night, always clawing at the edge of the light, trying to erase it. Above all they were downright evil, without a drop of mercy, sympathy or true love. They were cunning, cruel and had only one goal in mind: ME.

Now the stories seem like they are trying so so hard to play off of reverse cliches. No longer is the monster a villain out to snatch the children away, he's a lonely misunderstood giant that needs someone to love him. No longer is it a night monster out to steal your heart, he's a vegetarian vampire who's all about fighting for good. No longer is it a drooling monster with teeth snapping at your heels, trying to eat you alive, its just a mistreated animal that didn't know any better, but once you take care of it he'll be all kind.

Okay fine, sometimes I like reverse cliches, but this... Where is the deep darkness to contrast the light? Where is the snarling black night that allows the hero to shine as he drives it back to it's lair -- and then goes in after it to strike the killing blow? If there are no true monsters to fight, how can you see the true hero fight?

It's the PC era. Fluffy kittens and cuddly puppies. You're not bad any more, you're misunderstood.
